Protection Considerations During Fault Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery

A Fault Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery (FIDVR), is the phenomenon whereby the system voltage remains at significantly reduced levels for several seconds after a short circuit fault. It is typically the result of stalling of induction motors as a result of the voltage drop, followed by the recovery after the fault clearing. The paper analyzes the FIDVR and the challenges to determine an adaptive strategy for dealing with it. The use of IEC 61850 based protection schemes is described later in the paper.
